When Mr and Mrs Bowen’s house purchase fell through they were unsure if they would be able to remain in the village of Brigstock where they had lived for many years. Whilst they loved the location of their current home, they had come to realise they didn’t need as much space inside and their large garden was starting to need more attention than they had the time and energy for. A chance conversation when Mrs Bowen was out walking their standard poodle, Sally, led them to The Fieldings – a small development of 8 houses in the heart of this Northamptonshire village.
Mr and Mrs Bowen had not previously considered buying a new home, and were unsure if it this type of home would be for them, so we suggested they take a look around one of our homes in Oundle. Once they had first-hand experience of the quality of finish and the high specification that they would benefit from, they were convinced this was the right move for them.
Six months after they moved in, we spoke to Mrs Bowen to see how they were settling into their new home.
“We’re really enjoying it here. It’s a really comfortable home, with an even temperature throughout. Our dog Sally particularly likes the underfloor heating. Coming from an older property we like the fact there are no draughts, no running repairs, and when we go away we can close the door, knowing everything will be fine when we return.”
How have you found living in a smaller property?
“Before we moved in I was worried about the size of the garden, but we’ve actually got more space than I expected. We can now relax in our courtyard and enjoy the flowers instead of feeling guilty about doing the weeding! I love the outlook at the front of the house too – so far we’ve had ponies and lambs in the field opposite that have been a joy to watch.”
Do you have any useful tips for anybody considering downsizing their home?
“Our new home is about a third of the size of our previous home, so we had to be fairly ruthless. I was surprised at how emotional I was about parting with some of our furniture, but I knew we couldn’t bring it all with us. What’s lovely is that our children have taken some pieces, so we have kept them in the family. It was a hard process to go through, but an important one. The furniture we did bring with us has fitted in really well with the cottage style of this house, and it helped us to feel at home very quickly after we moved in.”
Downsizing can feel like an enormous task, with many things to consider, but we hope Mr and Mrs Bowen's experience highlights some of the many advantages of moving into a smaller, new build home.
