Air source heat pumps vs gas boilers

ASHP 1

In recent years, what we look for in a new home has fundamentally shifted. Our lifestyle priorities are evolving - today's homebuyers are seeking a harmonious balance between modern luxury and sustainability. We want traditional charm without compromising on the modern efficiency and fuel cost savings.

As we collectively look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, how we heat our homes has become a major talking point. If you are navigating the property market, you’ve likely found yourself weighing up the traditional heating methods against modern renewable technology.

Key comparisons

Making the switch to new technology can feel dauting if you’ve only ever relied on standard gas central heating. To help you make an informed decision, let’s look at how an air source heat pump and a gas boiler stack up against each other across five key areas:

Efficiency

When it comes to pure efficiency, traditional gas boilers simply cannot compete with renewable alternatives. A modern, A-rated gas boiler operates at around 90% to 94% efficiency – meaning for every kilowatt of energy put in, some heat is always lost.

In contrast, air source heat pumps are incredibly efficient, often operating at 300% to 400%. Because they transfer heat from the outside air rather than generating it through combustion, they produce three to four times more energy than they consume.

Costs

So, is an air source heat pump cheaper to run that a gas boiler?

The answer depends on how you use it and how well-insulated your home is. While electricity currently costs more per unit than gas, the sheer efficiency of a heat pump means it requires far less energy to heat your home. In our EPC-rated, highly insulated, modern homes, running costs come in significantly cheaper than a gas boiler (300-400% vs. 90%), proving the efficiency of ASHPs.

Furthermore, as the UK continues to transition toward renewable energy and the Future Homes Standard being mandatory, the gap between electricity and gas pricing is expected to shift in favour of eco-friendly technology.

Environment

If reducing your environmental impact is a priority, heat pumps are the clear winner. Gas boilers rely on fossil fuels, releasing carbon dioxide directly into the atmosphere every time your heating kicks in. Air source heat pumps utilise a completely renewable energy source – the outdoor air. By switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump, the average household can significantly reduce its annual carbon emissions.

Installation

For an older existing property, installing a heat pump can sometimes be disruptive, often requiring large radiators or upgraded pipework to accommodate lower water flow temperatures. However, when you buy a new build home designed specifically around this technology, the installation is seamless. The entire system is engineered from the ground up to work perfectly with your home’s layout and insulation.

Performance

There is a common misconception that heat pumps can’t keep a house warm when the temperature drops. In reality, they are designed to deliver a steady, consistent ambient temperature throughout the day. While a gas boiler provides short, intense blasts of heat, a heat pump works quietly in the background, ensuring your home is always perfectly cosy without those sudden temperature drops.
