We are pleased to announce we are partnering with the Alzheimer’s Society, and have pledged to raise £5000 for the charity over the next two years. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed. There are currently 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2021.
Managing Director, Henry Barney, explained why we have chosen this particular cause: “Like many people, my family has been affected by dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society is the only dementia charity in the UK that campaigns for change; funds research to find a cure; and supports people living with this disease day to day. With so many families affected by dementia, it was an obvious cause for us to support. We look forward to raising much-needed funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.”
Grace Homes employees will be organising events throughout the coming year such as a bake sale and a silent auction. The first big event that has been planned is a ‘Jail Break’, where the three Directors of the business will be locked in their offices with only a phone, a list of contacts and their powers of persuasion to help them escape. Freedom will only be granted once they have raised a significant amount of donations, and we are hopeful this will get our fund-raising efforts off to a strong start.
Heidi Wilkinson, Community Fundraiser for Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland, commented: “Dementia is the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing it every three minutes. We are delighted that Grace Homes is uniting against dementia by supporting Alzheimer’s Society. I want to say a big thank you to staff whose support will help us improve care, offer help and understanding and find new treatments for people affected.”
In the East Midlands there are currently more than 54,000 people with dementia, and this figure is set to grow. Local support includes a Side by Side service which helps people to continue to do the things they enjoy and Singing for the Brain which promotes communication through singing which can help with articulation, concentration, focus and motivation.
