Moving home can be stressful. Factor in moving to a house in a brand-new area and the whole event may start to feel totally overwhelming. The good news is that with a little research you’re far more likely to find somewhere you love and never want to leave. If you’re looking for a new home in a different location, here are a few top tips to help you on your way:
1. What facilities are nearby?
Are you someone that eats out regularly or do you prefer to spend time at the gym? Perhaps you feel most at home when you’re in the great outdoors, making a rural location with plenty of walks on your doorstep an absolute must. On a more practical level, can you easily get to a doctor's surgery or dentist? Make a list of what you need close to where you live so that your local area is as well-suited to you as your new home.
2. How easy is to get about?
If you’re not moving job, how long (and easy) will your commute be? Is it a journey you would be happy making every day? If you don’t have to commute, does your new home make working from home a dream or a nightmare? Distance from family and friends is also an important consideration, as are local transport links for when driving isn’t an option.
3. What are the local schools like?
If you have (or are planning to have) children, be sure to check the catchment areas for local schools and find and compare schools in England here.
4. What are your neighbours like?
Neighbours can come and go, but it still makes sense to spend time chatting to your potential future neighbours before you make an offer. At the start of a new build development, you could be one of the first residents to move in, but on more established developments you’ll be able to find out what it is like to live in one of the new homes in that neighbourhood. It is worth taking a look on Facebook to see if any resident groups have been created, as these will provide you with a no holds barred view.
5. What’s the parking like?
Make sure you visit your potential new home when the neighbourhood is at its busiest so that you can see whether or not there is sufficient parking. Limited garaging and parking spaces will mean cars parked on the pavement, bottlenecks on the roads, and potentially having to park far away from your property.
